Physician (General Surgeon Associate Chief of Surgery)

The candidate must be a General Surgeon. The duties will include the delivery of outpatient and inpatient care to Veterans, including surgery, participate in on-call duties, be responsible for the day-to-day oversight for Medical Center's Surgical Service, and participate in performance improvement, quality improvement and medical education activities. Teamwork and communication skills are essential. Endoscopy skills are preferred. Surgical Services include Orthopedic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Urology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Gynecology, General Surgery, Podiatry, Optometry, Plastic Surgery, Pain Services, Anesthesiology, and Dental Services. The Wilmington VA Medical Center operates within a system of VA Medical Center's, with especially close relationships with the Philadelphia and Coatesville VA Medical Center's. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work within VA infrastructure and VA guidelines following established guidelines, ethics, and policies and protocols of the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Joint Commission accreditation standards and the professional Surgical Association standards. He/she will help to oversee all aspects of the surgical program, helping to maintain an effective leadership system based on clear values and high expectations that uphold and support the VA ICARE Values. Oversee resource needs to ensure timely and appropriate care for Veterans Document progress notes and consultation findings in an electronic medical record, dictation and electronics signature of OP reports and hospital discharge summaries Provide direct patient care, including surgical treatments as indicated, based on specialty Develop and/or maintain strategic partnerships with departments vital to the delivery of surgical care and lead initiatives designed to improve efficiency in the surgical services Serve or direct participation from the Surgical Service on a variety of departmental and interdepartmental committees Utilize reports/data to track service activities including visits, referrals, inpatient days, patient demographics, equipment utilization, revenue maximization and patient satisfaction. Develops and implements plans under the direction of the Chief of Surgery to improve efficiencies and Veteran Care Participate in recruitment, retention, resource management, and clinical practice management Participate in the oversight of guidelines and performance expectations for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system Manage staff training to ensure that required training is accomplished for purposes of maintaining ongoing skills, new developments in the field, orientation of staff to the VA, and The Joint Commission. United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13 to 16; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
