SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Principal Systems Engineer will be expected to be involved in day-to-day enhancement and development of Amtrak s systems. Involvement may include the following; responding to change requests, trouble ticket resolution, monitoring platforms for failures/ exceptions/threshold issues, performance tuning, optimizing applications performance and testing applications for product upgrades and patches. W
ill be expected to communicate with customers and upper management about platform and/or trouble ticket statuses, as well as working on occasional minor enhancements as remaining work capacity allows. Works closely with stakeholders to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with business goals and IT strategies, as well as, in compliance with the organization s architectural standards.

ESSENTIAL FUCTIONS

  • Preferred:
    BS in Geographic Information Science along with Geographic Information System application knowledge (Proficient in ESRI suite including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, architecture, mobility, etc.) in the transportation and/or utilities domain.
  • This position will lead the company s Enterprise-wide geospatial applications portfolio (GIS) that are critical to corporate management of facility, engineering, rolling stock, infrastructure, safety, marketing, Police as well as other data relevant to the geospatial analysis and management of these business areas and their assets.
  • Subject matter expert for creating and managing the application roadmap as well as managing or delivering various aspects of design, development, testing, and deployment of enhancements within the portfolio, ensuring application best practices and system standards are accounted for in the evolving GIS landscape.
  • Develop standards for GIS deployment, governance and use, providing oversight to GIS staff and users, while assisting with management of large datasets and web services including map, feature, images and integrations with the GIS platform.
  • Critical in facilitating the expansion of system functionalities to meet the goals of the business as well as challenge the status quo to enhance our current technologies, while confirming application architecture, functionality and reliability are maintained in accordance with IT standards and service level metrics.

Outline, develop and document clear requirements that follow an established methodology, while ensuring unit testing regimen is adhered and meets code specifications as designed.
Creates and updates documentation as necessary to ensure architectures, designs and other descriptions are up to date and describes the as-deployed system.
Consults in the development planning process with customers, IT business analysts, architects and team members.
Contributes to the design specifications and assists in sizing technical requirements.
Ensures all development work is in harmony with all standards as well as ensuring the overall implementation is connected to Amtrak's technology strategies.
Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs. May assist in defining development guidelines and standards to be utilized in software development/integration. Provides ongoing maintenance of applications.
Leads, guides and provides cross functional project oversight.
Assists in the development of user guides and training documentation. Provides technical guidance or system process expertise.
Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Business Management

years of relevant work experience in subject matter expert capacity required to satisfy education and experience requirements
Have a broad level of understanding surrounding information systems and application architecture standards.
Focuses on business goals while ensuring development is completed on time.
Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment.
Must have experience/in-depth knowledge of business operations and systems requirements processes including ability to measure short- and long-term business goals. Proven ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language.
Experience in educating project team members on business unit goals, objectives, and initiatives.
Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret documents communicating business needs and requirements.
Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through direct interaction and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology.
Excellent troubleshooting skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Business Management with 9
years relevant experience.
Master s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Business Management
